At this point, controversial Jason Day outfits are practically a major tradition. Ever since signing with golf-meets-streetwear brand Malbon in 2024, the Queenslander has used the major championships as a platform for his boldest looks, ruffling his fair share of feathers in the process. Augusta National once even asked him to remove a jumper mid-round, creating one of the most unintentionally hilarious fashion moments in golf history.

The song remains very much the same at the US Open this week, where Day flexed the rarely seen urban-camo-and-above-knee-shorts combo during his practice round on Wednesday. If you thought sweater vests were polarising, then get a load of this.

Now I’ve lived in New York City for 15 years. A pair of shorts and some fashion-flage doesn’t phase me in the slightest, and as long as it looks clean and co-ordinated, I don’t much care what is “traditionally” worn or not worn on the golf course. The internet, however, is not quite so desensitised.

Honestly, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a redneck dressed like this, let alone playing Shinnecock, but the point is the peanut gallery were so disgusted they were barely able to finish their peanuts. Unfortunately for them, there’s plenty more where this came from. We still have at least two more days of Day scripting to go and haven’t even discussed Viktor Hovland yet. Needless to say, if you’re squeamish about golf fashion, it’s gonna be a long week on Long Island.
